Makin’it - Supporting Young People, Creating Safer Spaces
In a partnership with BBC Children in Need and McDonald’s, Spiral Skills is transforming a challenging space in Brixton into a thriving hub for young people. Every Monday afternoon, the Makin’It Programme creates a safe, engaging environment where young people can connect, grow, and find support. With 1,014 visits in six months, this initiative is driving positive change in the community.
Abdoul Ndambi, Changemaker and project lead, and Lambeth Council’s Contextual Safeguarding team have impacted a historically challenging environment by building trust and connecting young people to supporting community resources.
across 6 months of piloting the project, attendees have…

Expanding Activities and Opportunities
Young attendees have been feeding into what they would like to access in the space, including hair and beauty sessions, sports activities, creative sessions, games and competitions.
Community Partnerships
By collaborating with local organisations, we aim to provide more referrals, workshops, and support services, helping young people access career pathways, mental health resources, and personal development opportunities.
We are incredibly grateful to have welcomed some fantastic organisations to date, including The Women and Girls Network, The Lambeth Peer Action Collective, Esports Youth Club, Iconic Steps, Advocacy Academy, Orange Bow, Violence Against Women & Girls, The Baytree Centre, Trash Gang, Art 4 Space, CHIPs, The Healthy Living Platform and Black Thrive.
Abdoul Ndambi: project lead & founder of At one with the village
In response to calls from local young advocates and community leaders to improve the safety and inclusion of young people in the restaurant, Brixton Changemaker Abdoul Ndambi developed this responsive Youth Work intervention to protect them. Abdoul got into youth work following his own experiences of violence and asserts, “ I’m trying my best to make sure no one actually feels that kind of pain.”
“Seeing young people from different boroughs embrace one another—it’s something I’ve never seen before. They love the safe space, the activities, and the food that brings them together. This programme proves we can create safe, transformative spaces for young people everywhere."
We’re calling on local youth organisations and employers to join our sessions and showcase their opportunities to young participants!
